Continue the magical adventure of the royal mages
Sometimes a catastrophe isn’t the worst of your problems…
As dust settles on the buried kingdom of Ymittos, Princess Derya faces a horrifying truth: her friend Princess Eliana has perished after failing to break an evil sorcerer’s curse. Which means the next obstacle in the plot to enslave the continent is Derya’s father — the Emperor of Cinar.
When the emperor tasks Derya with forming a crucial alliance, her only way forward is to race the sorcerer in a hunt for the magical scepter he lost a millennium ago. If he retrieves it, he’ll be unstoppable in his quest to dominate the world.
Seeking the scepter in barbarian-controlled territory could cost Derya her life.
But if she refuses the quest, she loses her right to the empire. And if she fails, there won’t be an empire left to inherit.
Behind the Scenes
This book took the story to the wider world and focused on Princess Derya and her quest to defeat the evil sorcerer. Readers were happy that Eliana didn’t disappear completely and got a few glimpses of what happened to her after she broke the dark. It was fun to push Derya to grow beyond the person she was.

Worldbuilding the Royal Mages series
The Girl Who Wrote on Water begins in the mountains on Ymittos’s eastern edge, after the horrifying cataclysm.
Through the book, Derya travels to many lands. She makes a stop in Nafplio, which is a Chechen-inspired culture, fiercely independent, proud and resilient.
Then her travels take her through Ethkarpia, which has a Bulgarian flavor and on to the lands of the northern barbarians, who are loosely Viking inspired.
There are four groups of barbarians: Kassians, Tarhuntessians, Veletians, and Rorvikians. Derya meant to go to Veleti, but ended up in Rorvikian territory. To find out how that worked out for her, you’ll have to read the book!
Here’s a hint: she traveled in the far north in winter, and met a several magical creatures. Yes, one of them was a dragon.
